EDUCATE TO DEFEAT DEPRESSION (EDD).

EDD is an initiative under the LEAD Mental Health Advocacy, with the aim of educating the public with the basic concept of depression, skills and knowledge needed to protect their own mental health and that of their peers. It contains a series of programs, set up to encourage people to have open conversations when going through depressive episodes and what to do if they are experiencing any form of distress or crises.

At LEAD, we believe that there is a basic level of awareness, skills and Information that everyone needs about depression and their own mental health. By equipping people with the right tool (knowledge) through the EDD programs, they will be able to understand the concept of depression, their own mental health, give priority to it and build healthy minds.

The EDD consist of a wide range of programs which include the following;

1. Sensitization visits to Primary and Secondary school, university and among other institutions.
2. Seminars and webinar
3. Talk shows e.t.c.
Through our Educate to Defeat Depression programs we have distributed 456 customized books since the program was initiated last year to educate students on mental health through education.

Mental Health is a huge part of our everyday lives. Hence, LEAD believes that empowering people’s mind on this subject matter will not only settle the present but it will also go a long way in creating possibilities for a healthy future.

“From my own personal experience working in the programme, it has helped me gain an understanding of everyone’s individual viewpoints, and helped me to explore new perspectives and ideas about mental health.” Peer Educator

A synopsis of the project is that, LEAD Advocates United Against Bullying (LAUAB) seeks to establish anti-bullying clubs in selected secondary schools to curb indiscriminate bullying by both teachers and students. The aim of this initiative is to stem or reduce to a barest minimum bullying incidents in secondary schools. As an intended outcome, it is envisaged that by reason of LAUAB, There will be zero tolerance to bullying as conditions will no longer be favorable for bullying to take place.

The success of this project hinged the level of awareness of what bullying is and on how well bullying has been eradicated in the target school. Another parameter that measures success of this project is the formulation of Anti-bullying policies in the target schools.

Research has shown that globally 20% of youths experience mental health disorders; bullying inclusive and oftentimes mental health disorders is said in a hushed tone because of stigma associated with it. This is part of why we at LEAD Community Foundation keep pushing for a mentally healthy society and we are going beyond religious, social and economic barriers to spread awareness about mental health. A good place to start is with teens and adolescents. Bullying is a major precursor to the mental health wellness of the target group. This is why this project with its target audience as students in primary and secondary schools is of utmost importance to us at LEAD.

LEAD has so far visited eight (8) secondary schools across Nigeria between January/June 2022 in five (5) different states. We have reached out to 2028 students, teachers and offered professional counseling to students during our visit.
